Beyond percentages, absolute numbers paint a vivid picture of the EV revolution sweeping across Europe. In Germany, a staggering 524,000 battery-electric cars were newly registered in 2023, solidifying its position as a major player in the electric vehicle market. France follows behind, with 298,000 newly registered EVs making their mark on the roads.

The fasting most growing country adopting e-mobility is Belgium. It saw a remarkable 148% increase in battery-electric car registrations, resulting in 93,285 new EVs in 2023.

Electrifying public transit: The rise of e-Buses

Public transportation plays a vital role in reducing emissions and easing traffic congestion in urban areas. The European e-bus market has experienced explosive growth, with registrations soaring by 47% in 2023. Over 28% of newly registered buses now operate battery electric or plug-in hybrids, a significant leap from just 15% in 2022.  

The United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, and Italy are among the leading countries in e-bus adoption, with a significant number of electric buses powering through the roads. In the UK alone, 1,314 e-buses were registered last year, signaling a strong commitment to sustainable public transit. Germany follows closely behind with 835 e-buses, while France, Norway, and Italy contribute 743, 563, and 410 electric buses to their fleets.

Notably, Portugal has experienced a surge in e-bus adoption, with an impressive 501% increase in just one year. Similarly, Spain and Poland have seen substantial growth rates of 269% and 176% this past year, underscoring a continent-wide trend towards electrification in public transportation. Electrifying the haulage industry: electric trucks on the rise

Electric trucks are also gaining ground in commercial transportation. New electric truck registrations for vehicles over 3.5 tons in Europe rose by 115% in 2023, reaching a total of 7,975 units. This surge marks a milestone in the transition towards sustainable freight transportation across Europe.

Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands emerge as the primary drivers behind this extraordinary growth, collectively contributing to over 54% of all electric truck sales in the regions. With 2,169 trucks registered in Germany, 1,506 in the UK, and 1,148 in the Netherlands, these countries are spearheading the electrification of commercial transportation and setting an example for others to follow.
